Skanska to build Sweden’s longest wooden bridge
Skanska has signed a $35m contract to build Sweden’s longest wooden bridge, a 400m-long structure spanning the Skellefte River in the country’s north east.

Working on behalf of Skellefteå Municipality, the suspension bridge’s deck consists of a cross-tensioned wooden slab divided into a total of 10 spans, with wooden trusses, cross beams and steel hangers.

Skanska’s contract for the production phase includes bridge installation, plus superstructure bridge additions, paving and lighting.

At each abutment, earthworks will be carried out for new pedestrian and cycle paths, water and sewage systems, grass areas and lighting.

The Karlgårdsbron bridge will accommodate both buses and cars. It will connect Skellefte’s districts and is due to be completed in 2027.
