The San Diego Zoo’s orangutan exhibit has a new inhabitant fresh out of Fresno.

The orangutan group recently welcomed Labu, a 14-year-old male orangutan, who arrived from the Fresno Chaffee Zoo on March 10.  He currently spends his time enjoying resting in the hammock and exploring his new space, the zoo said.

“He has been adjusting well and is enjoying resting in the hammock and exploring his new space,” said a statement from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

“Labu has taken on the role of the group’s dominant male, and is the first adult male to enter the troop since the passing of its beloved dominant male Satu in 2021.”

His presence was recommended by a Species Survival Plan Program based on his genetics and the genetic makeup of the zoo’s group.

Labu can now be seen at the orangutan habitat after a brief quarantine and introductory period.
