WARREN — A Lorain man pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of aggravated arson for setting fire to an unoccupied motel room last year in Braceville.
Justin Chill, 44, of Hamilton Avenue, faces three to 24.5 years in prison. A background investigation has been ordered before his sentencing, which is scheduled for April 29.
Chill admitted to two felony counts — a first- and second-degree aggravated arson charge — before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice. The charges stem from a Dec. 13, 2024, fire at the Budget Lodge on state Route 5.
According to a Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office report, the blaze broke out around 1:30 a.m. in Room 122, causing moderate damage. The room had been rented but was unoccupied at the time. Motel staff extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived. An investigator from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office identified Chill as a suspect. Deputies later detained him at a nearby hotel, where he was questioned by authorities.
As part of the conviction, Chill will be designated an arson offender, requiring him to register annually for life under Ohio law.
Prosecutors did not disclose a motive for the fire. No injuries were reported. Chill remains in custody pending sentencing.
