After gaining recognition for the hyper, always-bubbly Erin Hannon on The Office, memorable roles in Bridesmaids and 21 Jump Street increased Ellie Kemper's status as one of our favorite bubbly actresses. With her Emmy-nominated turn in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, she also proved that she was capable of doing more heavy lifting as the star.
View this post on InstagramHowever, as an actress, author, wife, marathon runner, and mother of two, Kemper is juggling a lot these days. She's reuniting with an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-star for a kids' series, has collaborated with Pirate's Booty to create summer activities for kids, and has been hiding the karaoke machine from her two sons. In an exclusive interview with Parade, she opened up about all of it, including the question fans keep asking her: will she ever show up in The Paper?
'The Paper' Question
With her husband, Michael Koman, as one of the creators of the hit spinoff, The Office fans have been hoping that Kemper might eventually pop up as Erin or in a new role. She didn't dodge the question, but her answer was clear. "Erin does not make an appearance anytime soon," Kemper said. Still, while she won't appear in the upcoming season, Kemper insisted, "Never say never."
View this post on InstagramKemper made a point of praising The Paper's ensemble, saying she was relieved to genuinely love it once it premiered, since watching a partner's project can be nerve-wracking when you're hoping not to have to fake enthusiasm. "I was so relieved. It's phenomenal," she said.

What's Next: Reuniting With Tituss Burgess
View this post on InstagramFans of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will get a different kind of reunion soon. Kemper is teaming up again with former co-starTituss Burgess for an adaptation of The Elephant and Piggie Show, based on the beloved children's book series. She described the project as sweet and uplifting, and said they're currently recording it.
View this post on InstagramNot every project made it to the finish line, though. Kemper confirmed that Drop-Off, her previously announced series with Catastrophe creator Sharon Horgan, isn't moving forward at the moment. "I was really, really disappointed," she admitted, though she stopped short of ruling out a future revival, adding that "maybe, in the future, it will be revisited." She had nothing but praise for Horgan, referring to her simply as "Queen."
Much of the conversation turned to parenting — specifically, the universal summer dilemma of managing screen time. Kemper, a mom of two boys, ages six and nine, described the ongoing negotiation with her kids over tablets and screens as "such a dance," adding, "we're all figuring that out in real time."
That balancing act is part of why she partnered with Pirate's Booty on a new activity guide, "Captain Bob's Summer Quest Guide," aimed at drawing kids toward imaginative, low-effort play rather than screens. Kemper said the activities felt nostalgic, and it's items that most people already have. "These are all things that I did in my house when I was a kid," she admitted. She was also direct about one craft item that she won't budge on: "No glitter in my household!" she said firmly. I can't, I can't."
She also drew a distinction that her husband holds firmly: movies, in his view, function more like storytelling and shouldn't be lumped in with screen-based gaming, since one still engages the imagination in a way the other doesn't.
Karaoke, Dancing, and No Jackson 5 Ambitions
Both of her sons love performing at home, and dancing and singing are regular household activities. Though Kemper was quick to clarify that doesn't mean the family is rehearsing a Jackson 5-style act: "We're not taking this show on the road." The karaoke machine, however, eventually got banished to the garage after the noise became too much to handle. "I had to hide the karaoke machine in the garage," she said, "because I was like, 'This is too loud.'"
View this post on InstagramKemper admitted that her older son has done school plays, but that's about it. Rather than encouraging or discouraging acting, Kemper said she and her husband are exposing them to a range of activities, including sports and art. "So, dabbling in everything before they figure out what it is that they like the best," she said.
She'd Love to do a Horror Movie
While Kemper's IMDb page lists her first onscreen role as the 1999 TV series Neutrino, the actress had appeared in homemade family films long before then. When she was 12, she was in a horror movie — a home-video production that never reached beyond the family VCR. Asked whether she'd ever revisit the genre as an adult, given horror's current resurgence, she didn't hesitate: "Absolutely!"
She admitted that she hadn't seriously considered it before being asked, she said, but the idea immediately appealed to her. "I would totally do that!" She said. As for what actually scares her, Kemper named one film without hesitation: The Blair Witch Project. She said it's still "the scariest movie I've ever seen," adding that it "planted fear inside my soul." Many have drawn comparisons between it and the low-budget phenomenon Obsession, which Kemper understands.
"Those are the ones sometimes that have packed the most punch," she said. "I want to see that. It's fun to be scared!"
