Billy Joel, Paul McCartney and ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons are among those calling for the induction of legendary late British singer Joe Cocker into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their support may be helping—at least with the fans.
As of Friday, April 11, Cocker is in sixth place in the fans ballot with nearly 199,000 votes. He follows first place Phish--which has nearly 100,000 more votes—Bad Company, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper and Soundgarden, which is about 2,000 votes ahead of Cocker.

The charismatic singer, best known for his version of the Beatles’ classic “With a Little Help From My Friends,” is ahead of a number of other artists on the ballot, including Chubby Checker, the Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Joy Division + New Order, The White Stripes, Outkast, Oasis and Maná.
Fans can cast their ballots through April 21 on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s official website, but they should know that the fan ballot is only one factor that is considered in making the decision to induct in act into the Rock Hall. The institution’s voting members ultimately make the decision on who will be inducted.
While endorsing Cocker, Joel said, “I thought Joe was the most powerful rock and roll interpretive male singer I had heard since first hearing the iconic recordings of Ray Charles.”
McCartney expressed his support for Cocker last month. Gibbons soon followed calling Cocker “the very embodiment of rock and roll in terms of talent and spirit.”
