The 54-year-old actress – who was previously married to Charlie Sheen – recently spoke with Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver on their Sibling Revelry podcast, where she told their listeners about a few of the many times she lied to her daughters about their father’s frequent scandals that peaked around 2009–2011.
“If I was at a school performance, and he was supposed to show up, and I get a call, ‘Something happened sideways, hospital, whatever,’ I’m not going to tell the kids the truth,” Richards told the hosts during the Monday, April 7 episode of the podcast before she revealed, “I lied, and I said, ‘Dad had to work.’” The actress went on to note that at times some of the situations Sheen, 59, got into were “so outrageously bad” that she lied and “sugar-coated” the truth and “protected him.”
Later in the episode, Richards told the hosts of the podcast that her daughters were so sheltered that Sami and Lola, now 21 and 19 respectively, are “discovering things” about their father and that “they were at first getting upset with me, like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me this?’”
The Starship Troopers star also recalled an instance in which her ex-husband attempted to call his daughters from jail on Christmas and told the hosts, “I didn’t say, ‘Your dad just got f***ing arrested, and he’s in jail so come say ‘Merry Christmas’ right now.’”
Richards and Sheen got married in 2002 and welcomed their first daughter, Sami, in 2004. The actress filed for divorce in 2005 while pregnant with their second daughter, Lola, who was born the same year. Richards adopted daughter Eloise Joni Richards in 2011 after her split from Sheen and was remarried to Aaron Phypers in 2018.
