The 15-year-old from the Pleasanton Seahawks finished 1st in the event at 14:37.63. This time was barely two tenths under the previous record of 14:37.86 set by Liam Custer back in 2020.
Mijatovic was out fast, splitting high 52s and 53s for the first 500 of the race. He slowly dropped into the 54 second range around the 1000 mark, which is where he sat for the rest of the race.

His time today would have finished 12th in this event at this year’s NCAA Championships, about a second ahead of Tomas Koski from Georgia’s 14:38.20.
He has also swam new best times in the 200 freestyle (1:35.46), 200 back (1:45.77), and 400 IM (3:41.76) so far this meet. He still has the 200 fly, 500 free, and 200 IM remaining.
