FAIRFAX, Calif. (KRON) -- At Contratti Park in Fairfax, kids can be seen playing baseball on one side of the fence. On the other side, however, lies a homeless encampment.
This is just one issue causing community members to rally behind a recall of Mayor Lisel Blash and Vice Mayor Stephanie Hellman.
In Fairfax — a Marin County town with just more than 7,000 people — Sean Fitzgerald and Candace Neal-Ricker are a part of the Citizens Coalition, leading the charge of the recall.
Bonta issues consumer alert for 23andMe customersNeal-Ricker said city leaders are mismanaging funds and not listening to community needs.
"Our town needs some help," said Fairfax Citizens Coalition Lead Candace Neal-Ricker. "There are a lot of things that are not running well. And that dates back for years now."
"What we experience in council meetings is hostility from Hellman and we get dismissed from Lisel Blash," said Fairfax Citizens Coalition Treasurer Sean Fitzgerald. "It's very clear to us that they are operating on their own agendas."
Lisel Blash was elected to town council in 2022 and became mayor last December. Three months in, and she's now facing a potential recall.
In regard to the encampment, council did pass an anti-camping ordinance despite Blash voting against it. A lawsuit is now preventing it from moving forward.
Not everyone supports the recall. A group called Fairfax for Civility is fighting against it.
"A recall is generally reserved for council members or elected officials who engage in unethical or illegal activity, and this could not be further from the case," said longtime Fairfax resident Renee Goddard.
"It just creates a lot of contention and stress in the community when we could really be focusing on other issues," said Mayor Blash.
"I've never seen Fairfax so divided," added Neal-Ricker. "I've never seen my town of love and harmony and civility be so upset and distraught."
Once the paperwork for the recall is approved then organizers will begin working to gather enough signatures to get the recall before voters in a special election.
If a recall doesn't happen or doesn't pass, then people will have to wait until November 2026 to vote for new leadership.
