AMERICANS have been urged to make sure they are filing their tax returns as millions are reportedly eligible for a payout worth up to $1,400.
Stimulus checks are being sent out to those who did not claim a payment on their 2021 tax filing.
Internal Revenue Service bosses suspect more than 1.1 million people are entitled to the payment.
But, the clock is ticking as the deadline to file claims is April 15.
On average, Americans are receiving $781 as a consequence of filing their tax return, but they could get up to $1,400.
The figure equates to the final round of stimulus checks that was sent out during the Covid-19 pandemic.
But, some households may have missed out on Earned Income Tax Credit payments they were entitled to.
The IRS has broken down the number of people entitled to a refund per state.
In California and Texas, more than 100,000 people could receive a refund.
And in the Lone Star state, Texans are receiving $810 on average.
Americans have three years to claim their refunds, according to the IRS.
If they fail to do so, then the money becomes US Treasury property.
IRS bosses have urged taxpayers to be proactive and gather all the documents they need before submitting their requests.
Individual records can be viewed in their IRS account.
Taxpayers can also request documents that might be missing from their employer, and apply for a transcript to be sent in the mail.
“People should start now to ensure they have enough time to file before the April deadline for 2021 refunds,” the IRS warned.
The IRS revealed in December that letters were sent to eligible households, and payments will be deposited into bank accounts on record.
But the agency warned that payments will be returned if accounts have been closed.
Three stimulus payments were sent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first round was sent to households in March 2020, worth $1,200.
Then, a second payment worth $600 was sent in December.
The $1,400 payment refers to the checks that were sent out in March 2021 – months after Joe Biden was sworn into office.
