DUBLIN — The superintendent of the Dublin Unified School District on Monday announced officials are recommending three students be expelled following a violent brawl at Dublin High last month.
“Following an investigation into the event and review of available evidence, three students have been recommended for expulsion,” Funk wrote in an email to the district community Monday. “For confidentiality reasons, we will not be sharing the names of those students.”
The recommendation comes after the Feb. 20 brawl between a handful of students in the Dublin High lunchroom sent two students to the hospital. A third student was arrested. According to Funk, a boy knocked a girl unconscious as dozens of other students watched the fight, with some recording it on cell phones.
Funk has said the fight stemmed from issues between two families, which followed the students onto campus.
Five students were suspended after the fight, and the district saw a drop in attendance the day after when parents kept their kids from school after rumors spread of a possible armed retaliation on campus the next day. The rumors were unfounded, school officials said.
The expulsion decision ultimately lies with the Dublin Unified School District school board. If the board decides to expel the students, then they can appeal to the Alameda County Board of Education.
“I want to be clear that the recommendation is just that, a recommendation,” Funk wrote.
