Lions might be the kings of beasts, but only when they’re in their element.
The accompanying footage, captured in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, shows a hippo ambushing a male lion and ferociously driving him from a river.
Masai Mara shared the footage Friday under the title: Hippo Attack.
The reserve explained: “Hippos attack when they feel threatened or are defending their territory or young. They are highly territorial and aggressive, and their attacks can be deadly.”
As viewers can see, the hippo catches one of two lions by surprise during an attack on its rear, and it’s all the lion can do to so stay free the hippo’s jaws until it reaches the safety of the bank. (Click here if video player does not appear below.)
