Watch: Rashid Khan’s sensational throw ends Ryan Rickeltons dream knock in tragic fashion

The 28-year-old South Africa National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton got out in the most unfortunate way possible in the match against Afghanistan National Cricket Team on Friday.

The third match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is currently underway at the National Stadium in Karachi between the Group B teams - Afghanistan and South Africa.

Rickelton has been in great form of late across all three formats of the game. He recently smashed a double century in Test cricket and had a brilliant outing in the recent edition of SA20.

Ryan Rickelton has continued his dream form in the ODIs as well as he hit a brilliant ton in South Africa's Champions Trophy opener against the Afghans.

He looked good in the middle while facing the Afghanistan bowlers and never looked under pressure. The wicketkeeper-batsman completed his fifty off 48 balls and then reached the three-figure milestone off 101 balls.

With this, Ryan Rickelton became the first Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman to hit a century in the ICC Champions Trophy. Also, he became the second South African player to score a century on his ICC tournament debut after Gary Kirsten, who played a knock of 188* runs against UAE in World Cup 1996.

His innings ended in the 36th over in the most unfortunate fashion as he got run out. On the third ball of the over Rickleton shimmied down the track to play a flat delivery back to Rashid Khan.

Rashid Khan instantly picked up the ball and threw it at the keeper as Rickleton ducked down while trying to get back to his crease. The wicketkeeper-batsman put in a dive, but Gurbaz quickly removed the bails and he got run out as his bat was in the air.

Ryan Rickelton walked back to a standing ovation from the crowd after scoring 103 runs off 106 balls, with 7 fours and 1 six.

What happened in South Africa’s last ICC Champions Trophy match

South Africa’s previous ICC Champions Trophy match was held on June 11, 2017, against India at The Oval. It ended on a poor note for them as they faced a disastrous 8-wicket defeat that knocked them out of the tournament.

Batting first, they got bowled out for 191 in 44.3 overs, losing eight wickets for just 51 runs after being in a solid position at 140/2. Then, the Men In Blue comfortably chased the target, with 72 balls to spare.

South Africa openers Quinton de Kock (53 off 72) and Hashim Amla (35 off 54) took their team to a good start and built a 76-run opening stand.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin removed Amla, and Ravindra Jadeja dismissed de Kock, triggering a collapse. Faf du Plessis (36 off 50) looked good in the middle but was involved in two run-outs—AB de Villiers (16 off 12) and David Miller (1 off 3). The back-to-back wickets shattered South Africa's momentum and put them under pressure.

Jasprit Bumrah (2/28) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/23) shined for India, while Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket each.

While chasing the total, Rohit Sharma got out early but Shikhar Dhawan (78 off 83) and Virat Kohli (76* off 101) dominated the Proteas bowling attack. Imran Tahir and Morne Morkel picked up a wicket each, but the damage was already done, and India easily registered a win.
