Shubman Gill gives no-nonsense verdict on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohlis future

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continued to underline their value to India during the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies. While Kohli made a match-winning unbeaten century in the opening ODI, Rohit followed it up with a hundred in the second game before narrowly missing another century in the series finale.

The performances have once again brought the future of the two senior batters into focus. However, India captain Shubman Gill made it clear that the team's focus remains on the performances of the two veterans rather than the outside discussion surrounding their ODI futures.

Kohli and Rohit were among India's most consistent performers during the three-match ODI series, despite India eventually losing the final game in New Chandigarh by five wickets and finishing the series with a 2-1 victory.

Virat Kohli began the series in excellent fashion, scoring an unbeaten 139 in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram. He followed it with 29 in the second ODI in Guwahati before being dismissed for a first-ball duck in the series finale.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, started with 32 in the opening match before producing a century in the second ODI. He scored 101 in Guwahati and continued his impressive run in the third game, where he made 92 from 85 balls.

The two batters therefore finished the series with contrasting but highly productive numbers. Rohit accumulated 225 runs across three innings, while Kohli finished with 168 runs.

They've been batting, you know, really well - Shubman Gill on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

Shubman Gill was asked about Kohli and Rohit's form after India's third ODI defeat against West Indies. Rather than focusing on their age or the ongoing debate over their international futures, the India captain pointed towards what the two batters have been producing in the middle.

Shubman Gill also highlighted Rohit Sharma's recent run of scores and praised Virat Kohli's contribution, while acknowledging the performances of KL Rahul whenever he has been given an opportunity.

"They've been batting, you know, really well. We have seen Rohit bhai, I think, in the last four innings, this is his third hundred, I think. So, he has been batting really well, so is Virat bhai, and even whenever KL has got the chance, he's, you know, done the work for the team. He's, he's put in that effort and he's batted brilliantly," Gill told the media.

I honestly think there is not that much time to experiment, you know - Shubman Gill

India's next ODI assignment will come against New Zealand, with the team having roughly a month before that series begins. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, there has been speculation about whether India could use some of the upcoming matches to experiment with younger players or give Kohli and Rohit occasional breaks.

Shubman Gill, however, pointed towards the limited number of ODIs available and the need to establish India's preferred combination well before the World Cup. For him, the priority is to give the desired group of players enough opportunities to build familiarity rather than constantly changing the lineup.

"I honestly think there is not that much time to experiment, you know. The combination that we want to play, hopefully, you know, we get all the players that are available from the next series, and the combination that we would like to play in the World Cup, we, you want to start playing with that combination," said the India skipper.
