The Looming Ayo & Coby Decision, Best Defenders in Franchise History, and Other Bulls Bullets

A piece of relationship advice: Find someone who loves you as much as Arturas Karnisovas loves guards.

Despite moving on from their best backcourt player at this deadline, the Chicago Bulls will remain stuffed at the guard position for the foreseeable future. Lonzo Ball, Josh Giddey, Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, Tre Jones, Jevon Carter, and Talen Horton-Tucker make up nearly half of the roster! At least five of those players are worthy of substantial playing time (Ball, Giddey, White, Dosunmu, and Jones), while a different set of five will be under contract past this season (Ball, Giddey, White, Dosunmu, and Carter). How Billy Donovan distributes minutes over the final months and a half of the season will be one of the team’s primary storylines. Then, it will be up to the front office to balance out this roster in the offseason and make some potentially tough decisions. Indeed, while Josh Giddey’s future will be among the hottest topics this summer, the future of Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu is just as paramount. Their fit hasn’t necessarily proven to be a problem, but their contract situation will soon back Arturas Karnisovas into a corner. The Bulls’ front office leader deserves a rare dosage of credit for signing White and Dosunmu to excellent, low-cost multi-year deals. The only issue with that accomplishment is that both are on track to deserve a significant pay raise in just one season. And, considering the current state of the organization, the Bulls can’t necessarily justify paying both to stick around long-term. I’ve waffled back and forth between who I believe the Bulls should invest in moving forward. On the one hand, White has shown flashes of borderline All-Star-caliber play. He is one of the best young high-volume shooters in the league, and he has only improved as both a ball-handler and decision-maker over the years. On the other hand, Dosunmu is the far more consistent player with greater two-way potential. While the scoring upside isn’t the same, he has also been able to step up in that department at times when needed. White provides greater upside and Dosunmu provides more stability. I think both can be very valuable to a rebuilding team. As of today … I think I lean Dosunmu? I have been among the biggest Coby White supporters since well before the Bulls called his name. However, there is little question that he is going to garner a higher price tag than Dosunmu in the open market. We should also take into account that he would probably return more on the trade market, and the Bulls are more than only a couple of pieces away from truly contending. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t forget that White and Dosunmu ultimately control their own destiny. They each have a strong case to deny any extension offer from the Bulls and test the free-agent waters in 2026. Remember, the Bulls can present each with an extension that starts at 140 percent of their final-year salary. Thanks to two great contracts, those numbers will come in well under what both players deserve. Last thing on this for now: We didn’t really hear Dosunmu’s name come up at all during this deadline, which feels noteworthy. We can’t say the same about White, who apparently had SEVEN teams calling about him in the lead-up to the big day. © Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports HoopsHype released a list of their top 78 defenders of all time, and the Chicago Bulls were well-represented! Three franchise legends find themselves in the Top 15, including Dennis Rodman (5), Scottie Pippen (6), and Michael Jordan (15). Some other familiar faces to make the cut included Ben Wallace (No. 7), Tyson Chandler (No. 41), Norm Van Lier (No. 46), Horace Grant (No. 55), Joakim Noah (No. 56), and Jerry Sloan (No. 59). I knew the Bulls always had a solid defensive identity, but this really does underscore just how many lockdown legends have dawned the uniform over the years. Also … does anyone else think Pippen should be ahead of Rodman? I know he never received a Defensive Player of the Year award (which is pretty crazy in hindsight) and didn’t clean the glass nearly as hard, but his versatility was unmatched. Cooper Flagg will be the next Bulls legend to make that list!

Cooper Flagg of @DukeMBB has totaled 450 points, 150 rebounds, 100 assists, 40 steals and 25 blocks through his first 25 games in 2024-25. The only other DI players this century to reach those marks through 25 games of a season are Dwyane Wade (02-03) and Ben Simmons (15-16). pic.twitter.com/x8zxr8u4K4

USA is set for a rematch with Canada to close out the 4 Nations tournament. What a genius idea by the NHL. If only the NBA could think of something that made the players care that much!
