Some people make New Year’s Resolutions in January, but I make mine in July, right before training camp unofficially kicks off a new NFL season. One of my resolutions is to write more about what is happening around the league. I’m not quite sure what that looks like right now. And I’m not certain it will stick. But I suppose it is worth a try. At a minimum, it will be nice to get these NFL thoughts that don’t make their way into BN Bears Bullets or generate a standalone post out of my brain and onto a screen.
NFL News: Mahomes’ Return, Shanahan’s Crash, No PUP For Parsons? More
Wowzers! Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been “fully cleared” for training camp, which is a major step for a player coming off a serious knee injury whose status going into the 2026 NFL season was uncertain. Mahomes says he feels “amazing,” and Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid says he doesn’t plan on limiting the QB’s reps. The Bears aren’t on the Chiefs’ schedule this season, but with games against NFC contenders such as Seattle, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco on K.C.’s schedule, I’ll be monitoring how Mahomes plays in those games. I might even root for him and his team if it is one of those “the enemy of the enemy is my friend” situations that could benefit the Bears. But the details here stopped me in my tracks. Because if there is one thing we learned earlier in the offseason with the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini situation, it’s that the cover-up only makes things messier. The Green Bay Packers shared (via NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport) their initial PUP list, which does *NOT* include star pass rusher Micah Parsons. However, The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman reports (via Twitter/X) that Parsons will be on it on Tuesday. In any case, we will continue to monitor Parsons’ status throughout the summer and into the regular season because this is a major NFL storyline. There is a chance he could make his return against the Bears in Week 5. Out in Arizona, the stalemate between the Cardinals and quarterback Jacoby Brissett is over. The two sides have worked out a new deal that gives Brissett a significant pay bump reportedly worth $15.5 million. How down bad are the Cardinals that they dumped Kyler Murray only to give Brissett a pay raise? In more Arizona Cardinals news, the team gave Director of College Scouting Ryan Gold an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. The league is accusing Gold of sharing insider information before the Cardinals’ draft picks were announced, as well as participating in NFL and college football parlays. Gold’s lawyer says the accusations are “blatantly false.” It is probably too late to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but the NFL needs to reel it in before something worse happens. The Tennessee Titans are inducting running back Chris Johnson into the franchise’s Ring of Honor at halftime of the team’s 2026 season-opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 13. Johnson was a three-time Pro Bowler and a 2,000-yard rusher while with the Titans. Earlier in July, Johnson shared that he was diagnosed with ALS. While putting the World Cup in mothballs until 2030, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio opines the NFL wouldn’t have a third-place game like the international soccer tournament. On the one hand, I think it would be silly. But on the other hand, I feel as if there was a way to monetize it, the league would totally do it. CBS Sports ranks the greatest trades in NFL history. And yet, the list does not include any notable Bears trade. Ryan Pace’s acquisition of Khalil Mack in 2018 should have definitely made the cut. No, the Bears didn’t win a Super Bowl because of the move. But it transformed the team from the ranks of the also-rans into a squad that made the playoffs in two of the first three years after the deal and didn’t post a losing record in any of those campaigns. Maybe current GM Ryan Poles’ trade of the No. 1 overall pick in 2023 will make next year’s list. It certainly should’ve made this one.
