In the IND vs ENG 1st ODI, it was the Men in Blue who registered a comprehensive 4-wicket win in Nagpur. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra is not happy with Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir. Chopra expressed his frustration over the underusage of star keeper-batter KL Rahul. In the previous game, Axar Patel was promoted up the order, ahead of Rahul which didn’t make sense to him.
While the gamble did work, it didn’t act kindly in favor of KL Rahul. Coming to bat at number 5, Axar Patel hammered a brilliant fifty, helping the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the series. Meanwhile, KL Rahul had to bat at number 6 where he managed to score a paltry 9-ball 2-run knock.
Chopra frustrated with Rohit-Gambhir duo
“What are we going to do with Rahul? It’s an important talking point. It’s slightly intriguing. Jacob Bethell and Adil Rashid were bowling. So you didn’t send Rahul, okay fine, but you played Rahul ahead of Pant. However, are you going to show that much faith in Rahul? You haven’t done that thus far because there were three matches in Sri Lanka, the first match got tied, you lost the second match, and you dropped him in the third match. Rishabh Pant played in the third match,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Aakash Chopra claimed that since KL Rahul was picked ahead of Rishabh Pant, then the support should also be given to the player to bat at his normal position. He further added that KL is the only player whose position has always been rotated across all formats of the game.

He argued his point by claiming that the right-left-handed combination of KL and Pant down the order could have worked perfectly for Team India.
“There was an opportunity here to play both of them together. If you needed a left-hander, you could have sent Rishabh Pant first, and then KL Rahul could have followed. If a left-arm spinner or a leg-spinner comes, you will send Rahul too low in trying to maintain a left-right combination. KL Rahul was dropped the last time he played white-ball cricket, and he hasn’t played white-ball cricket after that. He was dropped in Test cricket as well and then you made him open and after that, you sent him down the order. You should have allowed him to play now. You would have at least come to know whether he is in form or not,” he concluded.
