Opening Loss, Boyd’s Bad Inning, Offensive Traffic, Extensions, and Other Cubs Bullets

The stupid off-day after Opening Day is always so much worse after a Cubs loss in the opener …

Opening Day will always take on outsized importance in the minds of Cubs fans, both because it’s a holiday and because it our first game to watch, unpack, deconstruct, and analyze since October. I’m guilty of it every year, but I try very hard not to go too far. For example, yes, I found the Matthew Boyd deterioration after the third inning to be concerning after his mixed spring. On the other hand, he got an unbelievable 20 whiffs on just 63 pitches, and a whopping 44.4% CSW. Most days, that’ll bode pretty darn well. But Boyd got hit HARD in the 4th (he said his fastball started getting on plane a little too much, becoming hittable, and he wasn’t able to make the adjustment in time), and also gave up his one walk of the day at the worst possible time. Some days, that’s all it takes to create a hole too big for the offense to dig out.

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) March 26, 2026 Speaking of the offense, the Cubs did a good job creating traffic in the game, but they left 9 on base and went just 4 for 19 with runners in scoring position. Put that many guys on base in a typical game, and you’ll be happy about the outcome more often than not. Michael Busch with two doubles, a single, and a walk. Pretty good day for the leadoff hitter, eh? I’ll brook no criticism of Nico Hoerner on the heels of his big extension, but the decision not to challenge that inside strike in the 7th – a walk would’ve loaded the bases for Moises Ballesteros, but instead Hoerner grounded into an inning-ending double-play later in the at bat – was unfortunate. It was a good example of how much feeling out there is going to be in this new ABS world. Maybe it would’ve still been a strike by an eighth of an inch, but it did feel like a big enough moment to justify using one and taking the risk. Back to the extension, which makes for a tremendously exciting development after the Pete Crow-Armstrong extension. Hoerner is a guy who brings so much more to the Cubs than just his steady, high-contact bat, good speed, and superlative defense. He’s one of the leaders on a club that somehow has several of them, and an important part of the culture. There’s a reason it was such a priority to try to extend him even with theoretical positional replacements on the horizon in the organization. To that point, it’s not something to worry about today – you let these things play out and deal with it down the road – but the Hoerner extension does leave open questions on Matt Shaw and Jefferson Rojas, each of whom could very well be big league starters for a long time on their own merits, but now face a wall of locked-in starters ahead of them at all of second base, shortstop, and third base. The Cubs now have their entire infield under control through at least 2029, plus PCA. That’s quite a core to have in place for a good long while. PCA’s extension is official, by the way, and he’ll get a press conference for it tomorrow at 1pm:

    — ESPN Chicago (@ESPN1000) March 26, 2026 Cubs have had a lot of players:

    — NESN (@NESN) March 26, 2026 The White Sox got themselves blown out by the Brewers, but Munetaka Murakami homered as part of an Opening Day rookie trio:

    — ESPN Insights (@ESPNInsights) March 26, 2026 Brewers owner Mark Attanasio says the revenue hit from the RSN fallout the last couple years is $20 million annually for the Brewers, which, on the one hand, is not catastrophic, but, on the other hand, is like 6% of their total revenue. At the margins of an organization, that’s the kind of money that could otherwise go directly to big league player payroll. I’m not crying any tears for the Brewers or any MLB owner, mind you, but that does seem like a pretty substantial amount of revenue drop from a few years ago. This pitch is nuts:
