Alstom hired to make Madrid metro line driverless
French rail engineer Alstom has signed a contract with Metro de Madrid to create the city’s first driverless route. Line 6, the one chosen, runs for 24km and accommodates 400,000 passengers a day.

Alstom will design, engineer, install and commission the adaptions, including an automatic train supervision system to enhance monitoring and control.

Alstom says its Urbalis product will be used, and will improve the line’s safety, reliability, efficiency and capacity.

The project will be led by Alstom’s 800-strong Railway Signalling Excellence Centre in Madrid.

Leopoldo Maestu, Alstom’s managing director for Spain and Portugal, said: “We are grateful to Metro de Madrid for their trust in our team and in our excellence centre to execute this iconic project.”

Line 6 follows a circular route that connects 28 stations. It was originally opened in 1979.
