Underdog uprising! Jammu & Kashmir shock Baroda to seal knockout spot in Ranji Trophy

Expect the unexpected as Jammu & Kashmir is on their dream run in the Ranji Trophy. In the Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match at Reliance Stadium, J&K defeated Baroda by 87 runs on Sunday. With this win, in between the two heavyweights, Baroda and Mumbai in the same group, J&K topped the table to qualify for knockouts.

Jammu & Kashmir set the tone with a sturdy first innings total of 246, thanks to Shubham Khajuria’s 67 and contributions from Vivrant Sharma and Paras Dogra. Baroda struggled in response, managing only 166. Jammu and Kashmir extended their lead with a second-inning score of 284, putting Baroda under pressure once again. Despite Vishnu Solanki’s effort, Baroda failed to chase, bowled out for 182 in their final innings.

    Chasing a tough target, Baroda’s second innings ended at 182 runs, falling 182 runs short of victory. Vishnu Solanki played a fighting knock of 42, but Sahil Lotra’s stellar performance of 6 wickets and Abid Mushtaq’s 3 wickets ensured a comfortable win for Jammu and Kashmir. The 182-run win for Jammu and Kashmir showed how they are the underdogs in the tournamet.

    Baroda struggles with the bat

    Baroda faced difficulties in their first inning, managing only 166 runs. Shivalik Sharma’s 64 was the only big contribution. Jammu and Kashmir’s bowlers, especially Sahil Lotra with 5 wickets and Shubham Khajuria with 3, kept Baroda’s batters in check. Abid Mushtaq also took 2 wickets to further pressure Baroda.

    Jammu and Kashmir extend their lead

    In their second innings, Jammu and Kashmir scored 284 runs, giving them a solid lead. Shubham Khajuria again led from the front with a fine 94, supported by Kanhaiya Wadhawan’s 84. Mahesh Pithiya and Ninad Rathva took three wickets each for Baroda but couldn’t hold Jammu and Kashmir back, who set a challenging target.

    Third knockout qualification in history

    Jammu & Kashmir have made it to the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals for the third time overall, marking their first appearance in five years since their last quarterfinal in the 2019-20 season. They will face Kerala next. Kerala has also reached the quarterfinals for only the third time in the history of the tournament, achieving this milestone for the first time in six years.
