USA Swimming’s National Junior Team Director and six-time Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen shared that he is recovering from a pair of patellar tears that he suffered during a cannonball contest on the 4th of July.
Hansen shared the injury on his Instagram, noting that he spent four weeks in a wheelchair following his injuries and is now five weeks into his rehab process, walking without braces and able to ride a bike.
His post also shows the progression that he has made since the incident more than two months ago. This included moving with a walker after his time in a wheelchair, then to crutches, then to just braces, to now his rehab process.
10 weeks into the making of this post. July 4th I lost a cannonball contest and tore both patellar tendons in my knees.
Surgery 4 weeks in a wheelchair walker crutches braces 5 weeks into rehab and I’m walking without braces and riding a bike
What I continue to learn about myself is “being consistent and present” are super powers! No, I don’t want to do it again, but I really like the guy on the other side of this. My level of gratitude for the smallest moments is insane, and I’m ready for the next steps, yes, pun intended.

Hansen was named the National Junior Team Director of USA Swimming in October 2024, after serving as Director of Team Services for USA Swimming beginning in 2019. Just last week, USA Swimming announced its 97-strong National Junior Team.
Hansen’s career included six Olympic medals, including four consecutive 4×100 medley relay golds from 2004 to 2012. He also earned another three individual Olympic medals, with his lone silver coming in Athens in 2004 in the 100 breast.
Hansen is also a four-time long-course individual world champion, winning his first in 2001 in the 200 breast, a year after narrowly missing the US Olympic team for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He was a double individual world champion in 2005 in Montreal, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. He won his final individual long-course world title in 2007 in Melbourne, where he won gold in the 100 breaststroke.
