Add pain while parking to your pain at the pump.

The city acted fast – just four days after the San Diego City Council opted to double costs at parking meters, the new rates take effect Friday.

City officials monitor meters at 5,332 spaces in downtown, Uptown, Mid-City and Pacific Beach. The majority, more than 4,400, charge $1.25 an hour, which increases to $2.50 on Friday.

Rates at the remainder of the meters, which had charged 50 cents to $1, will double as well.

The boost is expected to bring in $800,000 each month, and up to $9.6 million annually, according to a report by the city’s independent budget analyst.

For the remainder of the 2025 Fiscal Year, which ends June 30, the city expects to collect $4 million.

Mayor Todd Gloria and the council, facing a $252.2 million deficit in the coming fiscal year, are looking for ways to bridge the gap, especially after voters rejected a proposed sales-tax boost, Measure E, in November.

Council member Vivian Moreno, the sole no vote on the council regarding the rate increase, said she understood why the need for the proposal but was reticent to raise costs more for residents who already are struggling.

Locally, the city’s new rates compare to those charged at waterfront parking meters operated by the Port of San Diego, which already are $2.50 an hour.

City officials argue that It’s been at least 20 years since residents have seen an increase at San Diego parking meters and that jurisdictions throughout California charge more.

In downtown Los Angeles, for instance, meter rates may rise up to $6 an hour. San Francisco uses “demand-responsive pricing” that skyrockets to $11 an hour at times.

With San Diego’s increase, according to the city, San Jose will have the lowest big-city hourly meter rates in the state, at $2.
