Another hour, another back-end reliever signed (or traded). This time it’s Carlos Estevez going to the Royals, per multiple reports. Ken Rosenthal writes on X that it’s a two-year deal with a club option for a third year.
Estevez, 32, has been a solid reliever for a long time, mostly toiling in relative obscurity with the Rockies and Angels. But he was lights out in 2024, including in the second half with the Phillies, and his past consistency combined with a big walk year are probably going to get him a healthy contract. It never seemed like the Cubs were in on him, despite their interest in this tier of the market. There were some questions on his peripherals, and maybe that, combined with the expected price tag, were enough to keep the Cubs out.
That said, Estevez joining Tommy Kahnle, Taylor Rogers, and Ryne Stanek in going off the board today means things are really moving in the relief market. David Robertson, Kyle Finnegan, Kenley Jansen, and Andrew Chafin are among the bullpen arms still remaining in free agency.
