I have, for months now, found the resurgence of the R word in public discourse to be as concerning as it is painful. My daughter has an intellectual disability. When you call someone the R word to insult them as being stupid, your joke is effectively: “omg dude, you are as dumb as this guy’s daughter!”
This beautiful, innocent, smart girl, made into a slur that people are giddy to start using again. To anyone who is throwing the word around, or if people around you are, please just consider that. She is not a joke.

— MLB (@MLB) January 28, 2025 That celebratory trot took nearly a minute, and featured more partying that you see on a typical walk-off! I could not love it more. Leones del Escogido went on to finish the game off in the bottom of the 9th … with a sliding catch in the outfield with the winning run on second base:What a game. What a series. What a finish.Leones del Escogido defeat Tigres del Licey in Game 7 of the LIDOM championship ? pic.twitter.com/IegG1lmPS1
— MLB (@MLB) January 28, 2025 Among the Cubs-connected friends that played on Escogido at some point this season: Junior Lake, Franmil Reyes, Reese McGuire, Martin Maldonado, and Zac Rosscup. Ari Alexander reports on X that the hold-up in finalizing the Ryan Pressly trade was a little more medical information being needed on Cubs pitching prospect Juan Bello (who is from Colombia, and was likely out of the country for the offseason). The information has been received, and the trade is expected to proceed as scheduled, so to speak. My guess now is that the hold-up – like with the Jon Berti signing – is the Cubs wanting to get their 40-man roster ducks in a row. They need to open up two spots. The Rangers, who parted ways with Diamond/Bally before it became Main Street Sports/FanDuel Sports Network, are now starting their own Regional Sports Network (in the year 2025). I shouldn’t chide, because I don’t actually know what else you’re supposed to do at this point if you’re the Rangers – but you do need to make sure that the priority is getting your games in front of as many fans as possible, in my opinion, rather than squeezing for maximum carriage fees from dying cable operators. That’ll mean making deals on the cheap with all providers, it’ll mean making some games available over-the-air, and it’ll mean having a robust and affordable streaming-only option for fans. It’s what ALL non-Dodgers/non-Yankees organizations need to be doing right now, actually, including the Cubs with Marquee. Thankfully, I do think they mostly get it. Albert Almora Jr. is still going, signing a minor league deal with the Marlins. Almora, who’ll be 31 in April, hasn’t seen time in the big leagues since 2022, and spent the 2024 season at Triple-A with the Diamondbacks (roughly league-average hitter there). An important complementary player with some of the best Cubs teams we’ve seen, and the first draft pick of the Theo-Jed era, Almora is always going to be remembered by Cubs fans. Hopefully he can find his way back to the big leagues on a Marlins roster that is woefully thin on big league talent. Cubs powerful first base prospect Felix Stevens will get some international experience:Cuban-born outfielder Félix Stevens (25) will join Spain ?? in the World Baseball Classic qualifier at the end of February in Taiwan, per source. — Joe Doyle (@JoeDoyleMiLB) January 27, 2025 A very interesting read on T-Mobile, which was not only more pitcher-friendly in 2024 than Coors Field was hitter-friendly (it was that extreme!), but was that way for seemingly a very specific reason:www.mlb.com/news/seattle…
— Mike Petriello (@mikepetriello.bsky.social) 2025-01-27T14:26:47.509Z The weird batter’s eye is not the only factor cited in Petriello’s piece for the offense-dampening effects at T-Mobile, mind you, but it’s the one that jumped out at me. We definitely don’t consider enough how it FEELS to hit in a certain ballpark when we talk about park effects, instead focusing primarily on weather, elevation, and layout. But if a batter can’t see the ball as well – the issue in Seattle is apparently the batter’s eye when facing a right-handed pitcher, in particular – then you could see a dramatic spike in strikeouts (which is what you see in Seattle!). I’ve heard about similar potential issues at Wrigley Field (especially for road players who aren’t as used to it), but I will probably have to dig in some more on that. Meanwhile, I guess we should be all the more leery about the Cubs pursuing Mariners right-handed pitchers, eh?MORE FROM BLEACHER NATION: Check Out BN Fantasy | Subscribe to The BN Newsletter
