Blackhawks 2, Wild 4 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

If you were hoping for a good start from the Blackhawks tonight… I’m sorry. Philipp Kurashev was credited with the Blackhawks’ first shot on goal at roughly 12 minutes into the game. They were already chasing two goals. The first period ended with the Wild having two goals and the Blackhawks having just the one shot on goal thru 20 minutes.

The Blackhawks “sprinted” to three total shots on goal quickly in the second period… but couldn’t get beyond that number before the Wild’s goal total matched their shot total. At the end of 40 minutes of hockey, the Blackhawks had allowed “only” 19 shots on net. They were credited with five (5).

Ryan Donato came out and skated his ass off to start the third period and earned the Blackhawks a power play. Seth Jones scored quickly on the advantage to get the Blackhawks on the board. Later in the period, ass the Wild mugged Donato as a group, Frank Nazar cut the lead to just one. The Wild were completely imploding.

    Star 1: Ryan Donato

Donato came out on the first shift of the third period and put a big hit on a Wild skater in the corner. He continued to skate hard and put pressure on the puck, and it was not only helping the Blackhawks flip the ice but it was clearly pissing off the Wild’s entire team. His energy and unwillingness to take any **** from anyone was the spark the Blackhawks needed to wake up.

    Star 2: Seth Jones

He rook a puck to the face in the second period, came back to start the third and scored the Blackhawks’ first goal.

    Star 3: Frank Nazar

Nazar scored the Blackhawks’ second goal of the night, his third of the season. The goal extends his personal point streak to four games.

    Key Takeaways

Ethan Del Mastro picked up his first career NHL point with the assist on Nazar’s goal. Congrats!

The first two periods were somewhere between the cure for insomnia and medieval torture. So when Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno got tagged for a suspect holding call and let the officials know he thought there might have been a little acting involved, it was truly the only part of the first two periods of hockey that were worth two cents from the home team.

Can't stop laughing. What a hilarious unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for Nick Foligno. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/K6KB353AVX

    — Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) January 27, 2025 The first period might have been the worst period I’ve seen from this team all year. The puck management was a total disaster. The Blackhawks were actually credited with 18 shot attempts (to 17 for Minnesota), but only one got thru to the goalie. Jason Dickinson won 5 of 7 faceoffs in the first period. He won 13 of 16 faceoffs thru two periods. And was credited with two shots on goal — two of the Blackhawks’ total of five — and a team-leading three hits. The Blackhawks threw the lines in a blender by the middle of the second period because obviously nothing was working. Jones took a puck to the face right off a faceoff with about seven minutes left in the second period. He went straight to the room for repairs. With Jones out of the lineup for the rest of the period, the Blackhawks had one right-handed defenseman available — Louis Crevier — and the only veteran of more than two years in the league was Alec Martinez.
