There is a high-stakes football game going on at this moment between the Chiefs and Bills, but the Ben Johnson-led Bears train stops for no one.
A pair of coordinator hires have been decided for Chicago’s football team. The Tribune’s Brad Biggs and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport have the double-dip of coordinator scoops:
Sources: The #Bears are hiring former #Saints head coach and respected guru Dennis Allen as their new defensive coordinator. The favorite to join coach Ben Johnson’s staff since Johnson’s hire, Allen adds experience and a top-notch DC to Chicago. pic.twitter.com/oYpIftgfB9

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) January 27, 2025OPE! And there is more from Biggs, who adds that Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower will be back in the fold with the Bears in 2025. Once that is officially official, Ben Johnson will make the fourth different head coach Hightower has worked for while with Chicago’s football team. Hightower was on John Fox’s staff in 2016, and worked with both Matt Eberflus (2022-24) and Thomas Brown (2024). That’ll be a nice trivia question to stump your friends with in the future.
The Chicago Bears have reportedly lined up their coordinator hires
Two of the biggest hires that new Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson will make in Year 1 are all but officially official. On the defensive side, it will be Dennis Allen. That isn’t much of a surprise. In fact, it would have been a legit shocker had Allen not gotten the gig. One of the first reported candidates for any of Ben Johnson’s hires was the long-time former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator. This is what we had to say about the Allen rumors when they first surfaced:
The recent results have been good for Dennis Allen. Last year, the Saints defense ranked 8th in points and 13th in yardage. In 2022, the New Orleans defense checked in finishing the year having allowed the ninth-fewest points and fifth-fewest yards. From 2015-2023, the years in which he was running the defense as a coordinator or head coach, Allen’s Saints teams had seven seasons in which they ranked in the top half of the league in scoring defense (including five top-10 finishes), six years where they finished in the top half in yards allowed (including three top-10 finishes), and five seasons in which the group finished in the top-10 in takeaways. That is a good bit of history.
On paper, this looks like a good hire — especially since Allen has head-coaching experience that could prove handy for a first-year boss like Johnson.
As for the Declan Doyle hiring, that one is a bit of a stunner. I wasn’t sure who I was expecting to get the gig. After all, Ben Johnson is going to do the play-calling for the Bears when the season kicks off in September. But tabbing the Broncos tight ends coach is a head-turner. Hiring a 28-year-old for their first coordinator gig is bold. But fortune favors the bold. And everyone’s coaching journey has to start somewhere. So, at a minimum, I am intrigued by the hire.
We’ll have more on these Bears hires tomorrow (and beyond).
