Focus on Education: Tree of Life Charter School planning for school grants

By Stacy Strauss

Tree of Life Charter School is celebrating its 25th year of offering a free Montessori education to students in the Ukiah area and is receiving several new grants to bring more resources to the school and community. Since its inception in 2000, Tree of Life Charter School has grown from two classrooms to five classrooms serving approximately 100 TK-8 students using the Montessori Method and Pedagogy. The two large grants that it is receiving fit perfectly with the Montessori philosophy of educating the whole child.

The school received a $200,000 California Community School Partnership Planning grant. Becoming a Community School means partnering with community agencies to align resources and improve student outcomes. These partnerships provide a focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement. All of these services and programs are much needed in all schools. The school will find out by the end of this school year if they will receive the California Community School Partnership Implementation grant over the next five years.

This CCSP implementation grant will give Tree of Life the resources it needs to carry out the plan that has been in the works for the past two years. Michelle Rich, the school’s Community School Partnership Manager, has been busy collecting feedback and data from the school’s educational partners in order to write the plan and apply for the implementation grant. The next Community School informational meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan 28, 2025 at 5pm. The meeting will take place at Tree of Life Charter School located at 241 Ford Road in Ukiah. All members of the community are invited.

In addition to funding for community schools planning, Tree of Life Charter School has also received a $200,000 CDFA Farm to School Incubator Grant. With this grant, the school will have the buying power to purchase produce from local farmers and hire a garden coordinator/teacher who will source local produce and implement aquaponics garden curriculum with students. Students will assist in growing and harvesting produce which will be served as part of the school’s free universal meal program.
