Welcome to The i Paper daily news briefing.
Child-killer Axel Rudakubana will be sentenced today for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe in Southport.
The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to the murders, as well as the attempted murders of eight other children and two adults, on the first day of his trial at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday.
It has since emerged that there were several missed opportunities to stop the killer – including that he was referred three times to the counter-terror programme Prevent – with the Government launching an inquiry into the attack and pledging to strengthen laws around online knife sales as Rudakubana was able to buy the weapon he used on Amazon despite being 17 and having a previous conviction for violence.

The Met Office has issued a series of new weather alerts, including an amber “danger to life” warning, as Storm Éowyn is forecast to hit the UK with 90mph winds and torrential rain.
Strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to move eastwards from western Wales and southern England on Thursday. Friday will see the worst of the extreme weather, with five warnings in place across the UK for rain, wind or snow – expected in Scotland and Northern England.
The Met Office has warned of “danger to life” due to flying debris as well as widespread travel disruption for those planning to make trips by road, rail, airports and ferries.
A new wildfire has broken out in California, forcing more than 31,000 people to evacuate their homes north of Los Angeles due to an “immediate threat to life” – a further 23,000 have been warned they may have to flee.
The latest blaze, named the Hughes Fire, burned across 9,400 acres within hours and is at 14 per cent containment, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
The new fire broke on Wednesday morning near Lake Castaic which is around 40 miles from the Eaton and Palisades wildfires that have killed at least 16 people and engulfed parts of LA – including the multi-million-dollar homes of celebrities including Mel Gibson, Bella Hadid and Paris Hilton.

Donald Trump has downplayed the threat of the Chinese government using Tikok to spy on US citizens, saying “you can say that about everything made in China” including telephones and computers.
He told Fox News that he thinks Tiktok is “going to stay around” after signing an executive order granting Tiktok a 75-day extension to comply with a law that requires a sale or ban of the platform.
The decision marks a U-turn after the US President tried to ban Tiktok during his first term, saying it posed a threat to national security. But he has now been hailed as the app’s saviour as it only went down for several hours.
Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Thailand
Hundreds of same-sex couples have tied the knot in Thailand today as it becomes the first country in South East Asia to legalise equal marriage.
LGBTQ couples gathered in a shopping centre in Bangkok to complete their wedding registrations as the law came into effect after the bill was passed in a historic parliamentary vote last June.
Thailand is the third country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage after Taiwan and Nepal and it is known as an accepting place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people – but passing the law was not easy, with the first Pride march taking place only 25-years ago and other marches being abandoned due to the threat of violence.
