The Bihar government has appointed Team India fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar as DSPs under its 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' scheme. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary handed over the appointment letters to the two Indian cricketers during a ceremony at the Urja Auditorium in Patna on Friday.
The scheme rewards athletes who excel at the national and international levels with permanent government jobs. Along with Akash and Mukesh, 17 other athletes also received appointment letters. The government recognized their sporting achievements and provided them with long-term career security.
Samrat Choudhary said that the appointments of Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar will inspire young athletes across the state. He added that the government will identify talent from rural areas and provide better training facilities to help athletes succeed.
"The Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna is being redeveloped, and the responsibility for its operation has been entrusted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With a seating capacity of approximately 40,000 spectators, the stadium will be equipped with world-class amenities and capable of hosting national and international competitions," Samrat Choudhary said.
The state government will also launch a panchayat-level sports talent scouting drive from September 15. The initiative promises athletes and provides them with training, financial support, and modern facilities to compete at the national and international levels.

Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said that the 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' scheme gives athletes financial security while encouraging more youngsters to pursue sports as a career. She added that the government wants to ensure talented players are not held back by a lack of resources.
"The Bihar government is committed to ensuring that no talented athlete in the State is held back due to a lack of resources or concerns about the future. The ‘Medal Lao, Naukri Pao’ scheme lays a strong foundation for dignity besides securing the future of our athletes. Our goal is to establish Bihar as one of the country’s leading sporting states," Shreyasi Singh said.
Under the scheme, the government offers direct appointments to posts such as DSP, Sub-Inspector, and Panchayati Raj Officer. Apart from the 19 appointments announced on Friday, the state will also provide scholarship letters to 637 young athletes during the current financial year.

Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar were born in Bihar before building their domestic careers with Bengal. Their performances in domestic cricket earned them places in the Indian team.
Mukesh has represented India in three Tests, six ODIs, and 17 T20Is. He also plays for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League after being retained for $960,000 (₹8 crore) ahead of the recent mega auction.
Akash Deep has played 10 Tests for India and has taken 28 wickets at an average of 35.78. Although an injury ruled him out of the 2026 IPL season for the Kolkata Knight Riders, he remains an important member of India's pace attack.
