Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD and Stantec, with Hathaway Dinwiddie as lead contractor, the 300,000-sq-ft, five-storey building has 100,000 sq ft of exhibition space and 30 galleries.
It will exhibit film materials from the Lucas Archives and artworks from many artists including Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, Artemisia Gentileschi and Robert Crumb.
It comes with 11 acres of green space, 10 outdoor sculptures, two 299-seat theatres, a free public research library, educational spaces and the Skywalker Grill restaurant.
There isn’t a single straight line in the building’s curvy, raised volumes. Ma Yansong said he set out to design not so much a building as an environment or scene.
Image courtesy of Iwan BaanThe exterior is clad in 1,200 uniquely shaped fiberglass panels made from reinforced polymer to create a smooth, flowing form with minimal weight.
George Lucas said the museum will showcase visual artists who didn’t become famous.
“I’ve spent more than 50 years collecting the work of artists who don’t always get their due—illustrators, cartoonists, muralists, painters—because I believe their images are as vital as any other art form. They deserve to be in a museum,” he said.
He co-founded the museum with his wife, the businesswoman Mellody Hobson. The pair settled on Los Angeles’ Exposition Park after plans for San Francisco and Chicago fell through.

“From the beginning, George and I have wanted this to be a place where visitors of every background can walk through our galleries and see themselves, and their humanity, reflected back.”
