SHOPPERS at one retailer have had to change their breakfast habits after a beloved staple was discontinued.
Costco members are aghast that their favorite bakery aisle muffins have changed beyond recognition.
Famous for their large size, the mega muffins have been reduced to more manageable proportions in a change that started gradually but is now spreading across more of the retailer’s locations.
What’s more, flavors have been replaced and the new versions are not going down well with fans on social media.
“Not impressed with the muffin change at Costco,” wrote one poster on Reddit.
“Can only buy one pack for $7, the chocolate muffins taste awful, the pumpkin muffins just fall apart into tiny pieces, and the almond poppyseed muffins are discontinued.
“I’ll be passing on buying muffins from now on.”
To add insult to injury, the cost of the snacks has soared.
Previously two six-packs of the large muffins cost $9.99, now it costs $6.99 for one pack of eight.
One fan posting on the Costco subreddit worked out that the new versions are a whopping 58% more expensive than the originals.
Commenters were divided as to the merits of the change.
“They’re so dry! The old ones were moist and delicious. The new ones are like they’ve been left out and have a weird aftertaste,” said one.
“I couldn’t even get my kids to eat the all chocolate muffins. You know they are bad when the kids won’t eat them,” commented another.
While a third member said: I just want my basic blueberry muffin fix.“I don’t need new flavors (especially when it has even more added sugar from the topping, since I liked that they weren’t crazy sweet).
“That change already kills any chance of me buying them like they’ve done with other staples in the past few years.
“They just keep making it easy for me to spend less in their stores with these choices.”
Costco membership sharing guidelines
Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they've been cracking down on offenders in recent years.
Primary Member Use: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it. Household Card: Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently. Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member. Authorized Cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.Credit: Costco
DIVIDED OPINIONS
attracted over 1,000 comments on Reddit and while many were dismayed at the changes, others were all for it.
“They are so much better…my family likes the new muffins a lot more.
“They are made with butter. And also don’t seem to grow mold in like a week, either,” said one fan.
But it would appear the instore bakeries haven’t quite mastered the new method of making them.
“I’ve had some batches that are super moist and really great. And I’ve had some that are over baked and pretty dry,” said one shopper, adding:
“I think they’re still working out the kinks of the new butter only recipe.”
The muffins are just the latest breakfast favorites that have been discontinued.
Costco’s 12-pack of mini cinnamon rolls have also gone in the last couple of weeks.
And Pepsi fans are bracing themselves for an ongoing change that will see Coca-Cola reinstated in the retailer’s food courts.
