Ukraine has been accused of launching a massive drone attack on a Russian military hub that produces strategic bombers and missiles hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian border.
Russian state media said that industrial facilities in the southwestern city of Kazan in Tatarstan came under attack overnight on Monday, amid a Ukrainian drone strike that also targeted the Belgorod, Kursk, Ryazan and Oryol regions.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have shot down some 30 drones overnight, while Russia’s Rosaviatsia air transport agency announced temporary flight restrictions at three airports: Kazan International Airport and Begishevo Airport in the Tatarstan region, and the Izhevsk Airport in the nearby Udmurt Republic.
Measures to protect the facilities in Kazan were taken and there were no casualties in the attack, the Tatarstan governor said. “As a result, all the unmanned aerial vehicles were neutralised,” Rustam Minnikhanov said.
A Ukrainian security official said military facilities in Kazan were attacked by “unknown drones”.
Several aviation plants that play a key role in the Russian military-industrial sector were located in the area, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation – part of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine – said in a Telegram post.

Read MoreAmong the facilities that were targeted in the attack were the SP Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, which produces Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 strategic bombers, as well as a helicopter plant, he said.
The Gorbunov plant was sanctioned by the European Union after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
An explosives plant that produces aerial munitions and missiles, such as the Kalibr cruise missile and the Iskander ballistic missile, was also located in the area, Kovalenko said.
He added that it was becoming “increasingly difficult” for Russia to protect its skies, without elaborating on whether Ukraine was behind the drone attack.
Meanwhile Ukraine said Russia launched 141 drones and one ballistic missile into the country on Sunday night.
