South Korean investigators seeking to arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol have attempted to enter his residence, clashing with supporters.
The pre-dawn standoff comes as authorities try to arrest him over insurrection accusations relating to his martial law declaration in December.
Video footage showed investigating officers trying to push through a crowd of Yoon’s supporters gathered outside his hillside villa, where he has been holed up for weeks behind barbed wire and a small army of personal security.
This is the second time such a stand-off has taken place following a foiled attempt earlier this month by investigators.
On February 3, they tried to issue the first-ever arrest warrant for an incumbent South Korean president, but they gave up after a six-hour standoff with his presidential security agents and military guards.
Officers were trying to access his hillside villa from various entrances on Tuesday, with his security staff having created a fortification inside the gates by parking buses and large vehicles outside the building.
Yoon supporters and protestors stood in between the authorities and his residence after campaigners, alongside his lawyers, argued that the attempts to arrest Yoon were illegal and designed to publicly humiliate the embattled president.
This is a breaking news story and is being updated.
