In 2023, he moved to a backup role but still contributed with 145 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 217 rushing yards.
Ashford transferred to South Carolina in 2024, backing up LaNorris Sellers. He appeared in eight games, completing 23 of 32 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns while adding 227 rushing yards and two scores.
