The first time a whistle blew after the opening puck drop was 6:01 into the game when the Blackhawks were caught with too many men on the ice. At that point the shots on goal were 2-0 in favor of the Hawks and there had been one faceoff. The Blackhawks were getting their tails whipped at the dot but they took very little time to make their first power play matter; Connor Bedard scored six seconds into the advantage. Chicago held the lead for almost five full minutes until Jamie Benn tied things at one.
Everything was even for eight minutes to start the second period until Tyler Bertuzzi caught old friend Colin Blackwell with an elbow. Bertuzzi was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. And Dallas scored 12 seconds into the five-minute penalty to take the lead. But they only scored once on the major, and burned their timeout with 93 seconds left on the advantage. The Stars scored a third goal with a little more than five minutes left in the second period.
Dallas scored ten seconds into the third period. They scored again 2:55 into the third period and what was a back-and-forth game for most of two periods was now a blowout.
Star 1: Jason Dickinson
Dickinson spent a team-high 6:09 killing penalties thru the first two periods. According to Natural Stat Trick, he had spent 8:19 of his 10:49 on the ice thru two periods directly against Jason Robertson. During that time, the Stars scored their power play goal but he effectively shut down Robertson’s line at even strength. He was also credited with two hits, two shots on goal and one blocked shot by the end of the second.
Star 2: Connor Bedard
If you want your star players to show out on national television from the get go, Bedard got that memo tonight. He was credited with three of the Blackhawks’ five shots on goal in the first period, one of the four blocked shots and scored the opening goal of the night. And yet, even though he had the Blackhawks’ only goal while the game was close, being an 0-for at the dot and minus-four keeps me from making him my No. 1 star tonight. Dallas feasted on his line all night.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) December 30, 2024Star 3: Nick Foligno
He was the Blackhawks best guy in the faceoff guy and was just behind Dickinson in penalty killing time. There wasn’t much to work with on this roster tonight but Foligno worked hard.
Key Takeaways
Here’s the hit that got Bertuzzi tossed in the second period. I’m not buying that this is worthy of five and a game.Tyler Bertuzzi receives a five-minute major and game misconduct. pic.twitter.com/XlKrWlyHmd
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) December 30, 2024 The Blackhawks won only 6 of 14 faceoffs in the first period, but what stood out was Dickinson only taking one draw. Teuvo Teräväinen won two of three (2-2 on the power play, 0-1 on the penalty kill). After Bertuzzi got the showers, Taylor Hall took his spot on the Blackhawks’ top power play. Ilya Mikheyev moved onto the second unit. For the folks who were concerned about the defensive pairs as they were lined up in the pregame, Seth Jones (16:24) skated almost eight minutes more than TJ Brodie (8:40) by the end of the second period. Nolan Allan did a really good job killing penalties tonight. I know Wyatt Kaiser is back up and, at some point, Alec Martinez is going to return to the lineup and someone is going to have to sit but I struggle to come up with a reason why he would be a guy in the press box. Arvid Söderblom was not as bad as the final score would tell you. He made some good saves in the first two periods to keep the game close. The guys in front of him were just not very good tonight against a good, heavy Dallas team. With 4:21 left in regulation, Pat Maroon picked up two separate minor penalties. Read More Details
