Former Colorado Buffaloes star and current Boston Celtics guard, Derrick White has been named the men’s basketball program’s first “President of Basketball Strategy,” Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo and head men’s basketball coach Tad Boyle officially announced today. White has also agreed to donate $2 million to the men’s basketball program.

As President of Basketball Strategy, White will join coach Boyle’s staff in helping to lead, mentor, and inspire future Buffaloes. The first person to hold his role in CU history, his specific duties will include offering advice and counsel with respect to NIL, revenue sharing, roster construction, athlete development, and team culture, using his experience from being a part of two of the most successful organizations in sports, the San Antonio Spurs and the Celtics.  White will also serve as program ambassador, assist with donor relations, help cultivate new revenue opportunities, and serve as an advisor to the Director of Athletics.

“Getting to know Derrick since my arrival has been an absolute pleasure, and I could not be more excited for him to join us in this role,” said Lovo. “Derrick is a Buffs legend, but what stands out most is his heart and his desire to give back. His generosity is about more than a single gift. He wants to inspire others to invest in our student-athletes and build a culture of giving that lifts this entire department. I am thrilled to work alongside him and leverage the experience of an NBA Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist not only to elevate our men’s basketball program, but all of CU Athletics.”

“Derrick’s incredible abilities as a basketball player are well known but he’s an even better person,” said Boyle. “His character and integrity are unmatched and he is the perfect person to teach, lead, and inspire future players in our program. My deepest heartfelt thanks to Derrick, his wife Hannah, and his entire family for their unwavering support of CU men’s basketball.”

“Colorado has always been home to me and I’m so thrilled to be able to give back to a program that has been so instrumental in making me the person I am today,” said White. “This position gives me an opportunity to lend my knowledge and experience to create the next generation of Buffs basketball players.”

A native of Parker, Colo., White attended the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs before joining the Buffaloes in 2015-16 for his senior season. After an NCAA-mandated redshirt year for transferring (a rule that no longer exists), White had a tremendous 2016-17 season, leading the team in points (615), points per game (18.1), assists (118), steals (42), minutes (1,116), and three-pointers (57). His 49 blocks that year are the CU record for most blocks in a season by a guard.

White was named to the All-Pac-12 Conference First Team, Pac-12 All-Defensive and All-Tournament Teams before being selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft with the 29th overall pick.

“Derrick White has been an inspiration to future Buffs since he left Boulder nearly a decade ago, and I’m so excited that he will continue to inspire our student-athletes both on and off the court for years to come,” said University of Colorado Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz. “I am so thankful to Derrick and his family for this transformational commitment to CU Athletics and for his dedication to our men’s basketball program.”

White just completed his ninth NBA season and fifth with the Celtics, with whom he won an NBA Championship in 2024. That same year, White earned a Gold Medal as part of the United States Olympic Basketball Team in Paris, becoming one of just eight players all-time to win an NBA title and an Olympic Gold in the same year. Throughout his NBA career, White has averaged 13.4 points per game and 13.1 points per game in the playoffs.

Colorado men’s basketball season tickets are on sale now. It’s been a busy offseason for Boyle’s Buffs, who have added 11 players to complement returners Barrington Hargress, Jalin Holland, Ian Inman, and Josiah Sanders.
