In a matchup of double-digit win teams, a strong first half from the San Diego State women’s basketball team was enough to hold off Boise State 74-59 Sunday in the Mountain West opener for both teams.
Adryana Quezada came off the bench and led the Aztecs with 19 points. Kim Villalobos and Veronica Sheffey were the only other Aztecs that scored in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
SDSU opened on a 17-6 run in the first quarter, which impressed head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson.
“We knew we were going to have to dig deep and be disciplined defensively today and I was proud of what we showed today,” Terry-Hutson said. “We got some big stops that allowed us to take control of the game.
Part of those big stops were in the first half, where the Aztecs took a 39-27 lead into halftime, one that they would eventually build on en route to a comfortable victory.
Now 1-0 in conference play, SDSU will rest up before a road trip to Colorado to play Colorado State on Jan. 1 at 12 p.m. PST.
