“Onshore westerly winds will increase Tuesday and peak Tuesday night,  strongest in the mountains, through passes, and into the deserts,” San Diego NWS said. “Current forecast has peak wind gusts of 35-45 mph, locally up to 55 mph in wind prone locations.”

Inland valley areas will see partly cloudy conditions throughout the week, with a slight chance of showers Tuesday afternoon and highs ranging in the mid-60s to low 70s. Mountain areas could also expect to see some light showers by Tuesday, with partly cloudy conditions and highs in the low 60s.

“Periods of high clouds expected through the day. Areas of fog are possible for the western valleys, locally near the coast, tonight into Monday morning,” the NWS said. “Near average temperatures expected near the coast with above average temperatures away from the coast through Tuesday.”

Monday’s San Diego surf forecast includes a high-risk rip current, with surf height from 6 to 10 feet, set to 12 feet and west swell from 270 degrees. Forecasters said 8 to 9 foot waves could occur within 30 nautical miles of the coast but with relatively long periods of 16 to 20 seconds. Wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots are expected Tuesday night in the outer coastal waters.

High surf and small craft advisories will remain in effect until at least 4 a.m. Christmas morning. Large-breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet along the county’s coast are expected, with local sets up to 13 feet. Officials said that there might be dangerous surf conditions, localized beach erosion, and overflow, warning inexperienced swimmers to use caution in the water.
