A Longest Night candle lighting service will be held at Ukiah United Methodist Church at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.
It has become a tradition among some churches to hold a service on the Winter Solstice to acknowledge grief and loss, according to Pastor Michele Robbins, who noted that the anticipation of renewed grief as Christmas Eve approaches can be difficult for many to bear.
“It is important to name that sometimes hope, peace, joy, and love are distant feelings when we have encountered great loss,” she said. “Gathering with understanding community helps us move through these feelings and funnel our heartbreak in ways that, while not alleviating it totally, gives space for a gentle remembering.”
“All are welcome to come and be with caring community,” she said.
The church’s Christmas Eve service on Tuesday, Dec. 24 begins at 7 p.m. at 270 N. Pine St.
