The latest on Cody Bellinger is a similar tale that’s been spun for nearly a week now, but it adds another voice to the pile.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand was asked about the likelihood of a Cubs-Yankees deal coming together on Bellinger, and he reiterated the obvious fit and the expectation that a deal is going to happen eventually:
“Bellinger is a natural fit for the Yankees, since he can play either left field or first base. The Cubs are on the hook for $27.5 million in 2025 and, if Bellinger exercises his player option, another $25 million in 2026 (or a $5 million buyout, which would make the 2025 commitment a total of $32.5 million).
While it’s unclear exactly what the Yankees would send back in a deal for Bellinger, the Cubs aren’t likely to ask for a haul in order to shed some of Bellinger’s salary from the payroll. The two sides are seemingly far apart on just how much money Chicago would have to send to New York in a deal, but given that Bellinger doesn’t appear to have a spot in the Cubs’ lineup following the deal for Tucker, industry sources expect the Yankees and Cubs to come to a deal at some point.”
The expectation is for a deal eventually with the Yankees? Check. But everyone’s waiting on the money resolution? Also check.
Ultimately, it’s a waiting game, it seems, with each side possibly hoping the other is forced to blink by circumstances elsewhere in the offseason.
For the Cubs, it seems they are able to pursue their next starting pitcher (Jesus Luzardo in trade) without regard to whatever happens on Bellinger. They money saved in the deal would probably be allocated toward the bullpen, so as long as that market doesn’t get too frothy, the Cubs can afford to keep waiting.
As for the Yankees, it sure seems like Bellinger would be a predicate addition for much of whatever else they want to accomplish this offseason. Having him in place would give the Yankees coverage in the outfield AND at first base, which could in turn narrow their pursuits at those two spots as well as elsewhere on the positional side. It just seems more important for the Yankees to know ASAP whether they have Bellinger than for the Cubs to know ASAP whether they have the Bellinger money.
