Ohio high school state finalist Tucker Charles has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Loyola University Maryland beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, keeping it brief with a simple “Go Greyhounds!”
A rising senior at Cincinnati Saint Xavier High School in Ohio, Charles has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with Oak Hills Youth Athletics, where he specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.
Charles is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop over three seconds in the 200 free and 200 back, almost two seconds in the 100 back, over a second and a half in the 100 free, and just under a second in the 50 free.
A three-time qualifier for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division I State Championships in February, Charles won the 100 back (48.36, PB) and helped Cincinnati Saint Xavier win the 400 free relay (43.95 split), in addition to finishing third in the 100 free (44.73, PB) and helping the 200 medley relay (22.11 leadoff), all lifetime bests.
Charles also set a PB of 1:42.56 in the 200 free at the OH RAYS City of Mason Nov Invitational in November, 1:53.16 in the 200 back at the OH MAKO Holiday Classic in December, and 20.70 in the 50 free at the Southwest Ohio High School Classic – Miami A in January.

Charles’ current lifetime best in the 100 back would have placed seventh in the ‘A’ final, while his PB in the 200 free would have qualified for the ‘B’ final and PBs in the 50 free and 100 free would have advanced to the ‘C’ finals, setting him up to be an immediate contributor, with still two full seasons of training ahead before even lining up at his first conference meet.
Charles joins distance freestyle specialist Owen Gjertsen as the only publicized commits in the Greyhounds’ class of 2031 so far.
