On the night of Saturday, June 19th, tragedy struck in West Philadelphia as three individuals were killed and six others were injured in a mass shooting at a party. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on the 4100 block of Ogden Street, where a large gathering was taking place.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but authorities have indicated that multiple gunmen were involved in the attack. The victims ranged in age from their late teens to early twenties, with two males and one female losing their lives as a result of the senseless violence. The injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, where they are currently listed in stable condition.
According to authorities, the incident stemmed from a fight.
"I got a male down on Alden Street. Got one male shot in the leg, possibly the head," officers could be heard saying over police radio.
Police believe more than 100 people were gathered when shots rang out.
Action News was told the victims are 23, 29, and 33 years old.
Detectives are now looking for the suspects involved.
"It appears that there were multiple shooters, but it's unclear at this time how many. We have counted at least 25 to 30 spent shell casings at this time," said Inspector D.F. Pace with Philadelphia police.
Pace initially said a total of 10 people were shot, including the three who were killed. But in the latest statement released Sunday, police said nine victims were shot.
One gun was recovered at the scene, officials said.
"Preliminary information indicates an exchange of gunfire between multiple parties resulting in a nonuple shooting and triple homicide," police said in a statement.
Pace said investigators are still looking for surveillance footage to learn how this incident unfolded and, so far no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
"It's still very early in the investigation and there are a lot of unanswered questions," said Pace.
However, he said, officers have recovered a firearm at the scene and an investigation is ongoing.
“We need to stop with the barbaric behavior and the ignorance. Just sheer ignorance. Just total neglect for human life," Pastor Carl Day said.
As we mourn the loss of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured, we must also reflect on our own role in combating gun violence. Whether through advocating for stricter gun control measures or supporting community-based initiatives aimed at addressing root causes of violence, each one of us has a part to play in creating safer environments for all individuals.
