Residents of Williams Lake, a small town in British Columbia, are currently facing the threat of evacuation due to a raging wildfire in the area. The local authorities have issued warnings to some residents urging them to prepare for evacuation as the fire continues to spread rapidly. This situation has caused fear and uncertainty among the residents, who are now forced to make difficult decisions about their safety and well-being.
The wildfire, which is believed to have been sparked by lightning strikes, has already destroyed several homes and acres of land in its path. The dry and windy conditions in the region have only fueled the flames, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze. As a result, residents are being advised to gather their belongings and important documents in case they need to evacuate at a moment's notice.
Earlier on Sunday evening, the city told residents along Mackenzie Avenue to be ready to leave. Later, it expanded the alerts to include residents in the Country Club Boulevard, Fairview Drive, Tolko's Lakeview Mill, Woodland Drive and all Westridge properties.
According to B.C. Wildfire Service, the wildfire was around two-tenths of a hectare and is classified as out of control, which means it "is spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line."
Mayor Surinderpal Rathor says the fire was discovered at around 6 p.m. PT, but the cause remains unknown. Rathor said people are urged to be ready to evacuate, but there was no evacuation order Sunday night.
Rob Warnock, director of the EOC, said it is believed the fire was started when a tree fell on a power line in the river valley. Strong winds quickly fanned the flames.
The blaze is an estimated 20 hectares in size.
Members of the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and Williams Lake Fire Department (WLFD) along with support from the Wildwood and 150 Mile volunteer fire departments responded to the fire. During the early moments of the fire, members of the Williams Lake RCMP conducted tactical evacuations as a precaution. There are currently no evacuation orders
Williams Lake Councillor Scott Nelson posted video of BCWS aircraft dropping retardant around the fire.
In times of crisis like this, it is crucial for communities to come together and support one another. Residents of Williams Lake must remain vigilant and prepared for any eventuality as they navigate through this challenging situation. By staying informed, following safety protocols, and helping each other out, they can hopefully weather this storm together.
