In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to trade wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. This decision has left many fans and analysts questioning the team's motives and future plans.
Johnson, a talented young receiver, has shown great potential during his time with the Steelers. His speed, agility, and route-running abilities have made him a valuable asset on the field. However, it seems that the Steelers have deemed him expendable in order to make room for other players or address other needs within the team.
The Panthers, on the other hand, are likely thrilled to acquire such a promising player. Johnson's addition to their roster could potentially bolster their offense and provide quarterback Sam Darnold with another reliable target.
Johnson, a former-third round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, had been on the trade radar leading up to free agency even after leading Pittsburgh in receptions in two of the past three seasons.
The 27-year-old wideout has amassed 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns during his five-year NFL tenure. Johnson's hands at times let him down, especially early in his career, but he has tantalizing skill at getting open in space and remains a reception machine with 391 career catches.
The trade leaves Pickens as the most accomplished wide receiver on the Steelers’ roster after they released Allen Robinson II last Friday. Pittsburgh will likely look to add another big-time target in free agency or the draft after the club agreed to terms with nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson late Sunday night.
Notable wide receivers still looking for work as of Tuesday night included Cincinnati’s Tyler Boyd, who starred at the University of Pittsburgh before being drafted by the Bengals in 2016.
Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero was on the Rams’ coaching staff for the first two seasons of Robinson’s stint with Los Angeles from 2020-2021.
A fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft, Robinson spent his first four seasons with Detroit before signing with the Rams in 2020. He won Super Bowl LVI with the club to cap the 2021 season.
A 2018 second-rounder, Jackson has manned the corner spot for Carolina in 80 games and brings 14 career interceptions to the Black and Gold. He joins Patrick Queen as Pittsburgh's biggest additions to the D so far this offseason.
