The national basketball champions came to Jamestown in December 1910. Of course, this wasn’t the National Basketball Association champs coming to town. The NBA didn’t come into existence until 1946, when it was born as the Basketball Association of America. In the early 1900s, there were a few semi-pro basketball leagues scattered around the United States. There was no definitive national champion although Portage Company F was considered by many the national champs. Portage Company F represented a company of the Wisconsin National Guard but it would seem they spent more time on the basketball court than in military training.
