Japanese households continue to tighten their purse strings. They cut their spending again in October, extending the downward trend to an eighth straight month. Government officials say households of two or more spent an average of about 301 thousand yen, or around 2,100 dollars, for the month. That’s down 2.5 percent from a year earlier, adjusted for inflation. Households reduced spending on food by 4.4 percent.And they slashed the amount they put toward furniture and household appliances like electric heaters and air conditioners by 12.9 percent.
