Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence suffers ankle injury , loss to Bengals

The Jacksonville Jaguars face the possibility of having lost more than their footing in the AFC playoff race on Monday night.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered what was initially diagnosed as an ankle sprain in a 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported.

Head coach Doug Pederson did not have update following the game and confirmed Lawrence will have more tests Tuesday.

Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning -- filling in for the injured Joe Burrow -- did his best Burrow impression in Jacksonville, leading Cincinnati to a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter. But the Jags stormed back with a pair of TDs, the second of which set up by a Josh Allen interception of a Tyler Boyd pass, to take the lead.

Browning answered with a short TD to even the score 28-28, then commanded a late field goal drive one possession after Lawrence went down and was taken to the locker room. Jaguars backup C.J. Beathard answered with a field goal drive of his own, sending the game to overtime where Bengals kicker Evan McPherson won the game from 48 yards.

With just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Lawrence stepped back to throw but had his ankle stepped on by left tackle Walker Little. His right leg then bent back awkwardly as he fell to the ground.

The 24-year-old attempted to get back on his feet but couldn't, slamming his helmet on the ground as he got down on one knee.

He ended up being helped to the locker room, evidently walking gingerly as EverBank Stadium fell silent.

Trevor Lawrence is arguably the main contributor to Jacksonville's rise to contention over the past two years. He's never missed a game, and he was piecing together a stellar performance on Monday to keep pace in a back-and-forth contest where the Jags defense gave up 491 total yards.

At the time of his departure, he was 22 of 29 for 259 yards and two passing touchdowns, plus a score on the ground.

His 125.4 passer rating was his best of the season, and his 75.9 completion percentage was his second-best. He had Jacksonville in the game, and he was giving it a chance to take over the No. 1 seed.
