A trailer for “Grand Theft Auto VI,” the next installment of the wildly popular and violent game franchise, has been released early online after it had leaked. The trailer reveals that the sixth chapter is coming in 2025, according to developer Rockstar Games.

The highly anticipated trailer surpassed 32 million views within its first few hours on Youtube.

The trailer was originally supposed to go up on Tuesday, December 5 at 9 am PST. However, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Rockstar Games said, “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube.”

GTA 6, the next chapter of the action-adventure franchise, has been a long time coming. GTA 5 was released in 2013.

Ten years in the making, GTA VI’s first trailer could have been nothing more than the Roman numeral for six, and it would have likely fueled discussion and speculation until the heat death of the universe. Fortunately, the trailer was meatier than that, featuring GTA standards — fast cars, reckless gunplay, handfuls full of ill-gotten cash, and general American-flavored hedonism — set against the backdrop of Vice City, a fictionalized version of Miami.

Studios like CD Projekt Red, Bungie, BioWare, Epic Games and Electronic Arts are just a few of the game developers to go through layoffs this year. The Los Angeles Times, which cited industry estimates, reported that 6,500 video game workers were laid off in 2023. Videogamelayoffs.com, an unofficial tracker, suggests the number could be even higher, given that some companies have yet to disclose the number of people they laid off.

The game is currently set for release in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A Bloomberg report from 2022 suggested that the game would feature a Bonnie and Clyde-esque duo in a fictionalized version of Miami.

Rockstar released the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, which it had been teasing for Tuesday, December 5, a day earlier than expected after it leaked. “Please watch the real thing on YouTube,” the developer tweeted. A video briefly surfaced on TikTok with what appeared to include debug footage of the game. It was quickly taken down.
