NBA free agency began Friday night with many top players agreeing to new deals. Fred VanVleet made the jump into the Houston Rockets' expansive cap space, Kyrie Irving agreed to stay with the Dallas Mavericks and Draymond Green got his long-term extension from the Golden State Warriors.
Those deals can become official July 6. Between Friday and July 6, all deals can be agreed upon but are not binding agreements between team and player. They become official once the deal is signed July 6 or later. The new collective bargaining agreement took effect Saturday.
Who will make the right moves? That will unfold during free agency via signings or trades.

So, Joe Cronin wasn’t lying? You don’t hand a five-year contract to a 29-year-old if you have machinations of rebuilding a team. Paying Grant $32 million per year is a bit steep, but as is the case with Kuzma, it’s awfully hard to find wings with size who are plus shooters and capable defenders, and the Blazers had to pay a slight premium to secure, long term, the productive 3-and-D athlete they’ve chased for more than half a decade. The contract is hard to judge in a silo; it clarifies Portland’s direction, sure, but tells us nothing of what’s to come. Because there has to be more to appease Damian Lillard—running this team back without a clear runway for Scoot Henderson
