The Fubon Guardians of Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League are expected to post right-hander Jyun-Yue Tseng for MLB clubs, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Tseng’s negotiating window will begin tomorrow morning.
The news is a nice birthday gift for Tseng, who turns 25 today. Despite his youth, he’s already logged six seasons in CPBL. He’s been used exclusively as a reliever in his half-dozen years with the Guardians. Tseng has a pristine 2.36 ERA with 91 saves over 287 career appearances. He’s been a solid strikeout pitcher, with a double-digit K/9 in all but one season and a 12.8 K/9 for his career.
Tseng is on the smaller side at 5’8″ and 149 pounds, but he’s flashed big velocity at times. His heater has touched 99 mph in the past, per FanGraphs’ scouting report. Tseng’s fastball has good shape given its lower release height. He has a slurve to go with it.
This isn’t Tseng’s first foray into international waters. He filed for free agency in 2023, as noted by FanGraphs, but ultimately stayed with Fubon. Tseng was limited by a shoulder injury the following season and has struggled to regain his arm strength in recent years. He’s been more like mid-90s than upper-90s with his fastball lately.
Tseng has been on Chinese Taipei’s roster in each of the past two World Baseball Classics. The club didn’t make it out of pool play in this year’s edition of the event, but Tseng pitched well. He retired all six batters he faced across two appearances. He closed out Chinese Taipei’s final game of pool play, a one-run win in extra innings against Korea.
MLB teams that sign a CPBL player have to pay a posting fee related to the value of the contract. It’s 20% of the first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM, and 15% of anything beyond $50MM. The fee is 25% of the player’s signing bonus for minor league deals.
If he doesn’t land with an MLB team, Tseng could also head to NPB to continue his development. He’s young enough that he could spend a couple of seasons in Japan and still be a desirable asset to MLB squads, particularly if he can bounce back from a velocity perspective.
