No. 5 Alabama scores 21 unanswered, empties Death Valley in 31-13 win over No. 14 LSU ...Middle East

The adage, “The Tide don’t lose in Baton Rouge,” grew further lore in Death Valley Saturday night.

Despite being outgained 365-225 through three quarters, No. 5 Alabama football mustered 21 unanswered points after LSU took a 13-10 lead late in the third and won 31-13 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. The win was Alabama’s 14th over the Tigers since 2011, when the Crimson Tide fell 9-6 to LSU in the famed “Game of the Century.”

Quarterback Keelon Russell went to the medical tent with an injury in the third quarter, but returned to the field and threw three touchdown passes. He put the game on ice with a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kaleb Edwards with 6:23 left in the fourth quarter.

“When I went into the tent, I saw a lot of our heads go down, so I felt like I had to keep my confidence and keep myself going,” Russell said. “I didn’t want to see my team down, and we were in the fight together. They knew they needed me, and I trust everyone on this team; we just all wanted to keep going.”

With the win, the Crimson Tide added a statement victory to its College Football Playoff resume and passed its toughest remaining test. A road trip to Nashville to face Vanderbilt awaits Alabama next week, with home games against Chattanooga and Auburn in the 91st Iron Bowl to end the regular season.

The fourth-quarter resurgence mirrored several second-half offensive explosions for the Crimson Tide under DeBoer. The team scored 32 unanswered points to down Kentucky on Sept. 12, and went on a 34-7 run to defeat Oklahoma in the CFP First Round last December.

“It’s really a mindset thing,” said defensive back Red Morgan of the team’s ability to flip the script. “We know stuff is going to happen. We know adversity is going to happen. But what are we going to do after that? It’s all about how we respond, and I think we came out and responded.”

LSU punted with under 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, which set up a 32-yard punt return from receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, who made his return to action in the game. The lengthy return set up a 25-yard touchdown pass from Russell to freshman receiver Cederian Morgan in the far corner of the end zone.

Morgan has recorded two catches for 46 yards and two touchdowns to begin his Alabama career.

A rough third quarter — in which Alabama was outgained 156-82 — ended with a bang when Russell found tight end Josh Ford wide open in the end zone for a go-ahead 7-yard touchdown. A 56-yard catch-and-run from receiver Rico Scott on the first play after LSU took a 13-10 lead on a touchdown run by running back Dilin Jones set up the Crimson Tide’s scoring drive as it picked itself up off the canvas.

Despite being outgained 209-143, Alabama entered halftime in front of LSU 10-3, largely thanks to its defense, which forced a missed field goal and an interception of Tigers quarterback Sam Leavitt. Linebacker Luke Metz returned the pick 28 yards with under 30 seconds to play, but the Crimson Tide only moved backwards to end the half.

“I was just reading his eyes and his reads,” Metz said. “Route recognition from having the bye week helped, too.”

Alabama punched itself back in front as Coleman-Williams waltzed into the end zone untouched on an end-around handoff on second-and-goal from the 1-yard line. LSU threatened on the ensuing drive, but defensive back Chuck McDonald III’s fourth-down pass breakup earned the Crimson Tide’s defense a crucial stop.

The two teams traded field goals to begin the game, as each defense weathered promising drives. Alabama was penalized twice on its opening drive, hindering a quick-moving opening sequence that could have produced a touchdown with a cleaner operation.

Alabama will battle Vanderbilt next week in its final road game of the regular season at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 11:45 a.m. CT and can be found on SEC Network.
